Review

THE DEVIL TAKES A BRIDE is the second book in New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Julia London’s The Cabot Sisters series, and one that adds a very interesting new spin on the “Married to avoid scandal” theme.

From powerful love to sizzling passion, Julia London always delivers an incomparable reading experience. Returning to her acclaimed Cabot Stepsisters series, we meet an earl who can only be tamed by one wicked lady…

A plan born of desperation…

Once the toast of society, Grace Cabot and her sisters now await the shame of losing high status and fine luxuries upon the death of the Earl of Beckington. The dire circumstances are inevitable unless, of course, Grace’s wicked plot to seduce a wealthy viscount into marriage goes off without a single hitch. But once a stolen embrace with the wrong man leads her to be discovered in the arms of Jeffrey, the Earl of Merryton, her plan takes a most unexpected—and scorching—twist.

…and altered by passion.

Governed by routine and ruled by duty, Jeffrey had no desire for a wife before he succumbed to Grace’s temptation. Though his golden-haired, in-name-only bride is the definition of disorder, he can’t resist wanting her in every way. But once her secrets meet his, society might consider their lives to be ruined beyond repair…while Jeffrey might just see it as a new beginning.

Determined to save her sisters from the backlash of a looming family scandal, Grace sets out to trap one man in marriage but a twist of fate lands her in the arms of another instead.

This was a wonderful story from beginning to end…

For a man ruled by order, marriage to the lively Grace Cabot is the last thing that Jeffrey needs if he hopes to keep control over the madness that has dominated his life for years. It certainly doesn’t help matters that he’s wildly attracted to his bride and the only thing she seems to want from him is something that he believes he is incapable of giving…his love.

This couple is a perfect fit, as Grace is one of those people who finds fulfillment in helping others and you can’t ask for a more wounded object of her attention than Jeffrey and it certainly helps things progress when he discovers that she’s not the type to turn away when his darker fantasies are revealed.

I commend  Ms. London for taking on a character with a condition very much like OCD and making him the hero of the story, no less. The way his “madness” is handled in the story is beautifully and realistically written without some “miracle cure” popping up to create the perfect “happily ever after” but to give the readers hope that through his love for Grace he will better learn to cope and thrive as their years together progress.

This was a wonderful story from beginning to end and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the rest of the Cabot sisters as the series continues.
