Sookie Stackhouse is back in the eleventh book of Charlaine Harris’ “Southern Vampire” series, Dead Reckoning and once again trouble had come knocking on Sookie’s door. Two old enemies are out to get her, something fishy is going on with the fairy kin living beneath her roof and as if that weren’t enough to deal with already she has a baby shower to pull off between fire-bombings and kidnapping attempts. And you thought your life was complicated?

“With her knack for being in trouble’s way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte’s, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover Eric Northman and his “child” Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot-which is much more complicated than she knows…”

Dead Reckoning

As always, Charlaine Harris weaves an incredible and complex story that is simply impossible to put down once you get past the first page until the moment you reluctantly turn the last, hoping for more.

One of the things I particularly enjoyed about this installment of the series was that while there was still all the fantastical adventures of the previous books, at the core there seemed to be a strong vein of self examination going on inside of Sookie. Her character has evolved by leaps and bounds in the two years since she was first drawn into the world of vampires, shifters and werewolves. In this installment Sookie really begins to evaluate her place in that world and tries to come to terms with the revelations about her family, her true feelings for Eric and that anything resembling a “normal life” is just not meant to be.

Dead Reckoning is a positively wonderful read and a substantial appetizer to tide over fans of the HBO series True Blood, until its new season premiere on June 26th.
