Review

Book two of the Stud Club trilogy by Tessa Dare, TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE finally made its way into my greedy little hands yesterday and I would need a thesaurus to come up with enough adjectives meaning “wonderful” to do it justice.

How long could she resist him?

Luck is a double-edged sword for brooding war hero Rhys St. Maur. His death wish went unanswered on the battlefield, while fate allowed the murder of his friend in the elite gentlemen’s society known as the Stud Club. Out of options, Rhys returns to his ancestral home on the moors of Devonshire, expecting anything but a chance at redemption in the arms of a beautiful innkeeper, who dares him to take on the demons of his past — and the sweet temptation of a woman’s love.

Meredith Maddox believes in hard work, not fate, and romance isn’t part of her plan. But when Rhys returns, battle-scarred, world-weary, and more dangerously attractive than ever, the lovely widow is torn between determination and desire. As a deep mystery and dangerous smugglers threaten much more than their passionate reckoning, Meredith discovers that she must trust everything to a wager her heart placed long ago.

One of the things I love about Tessa Dare’s stories is that the characters aren’t always your standard, cookie cutter type people—they have basic human flaws and failings just like everyone else. The heroines aren’t always virginal misses waiting for Mr. Right to sweep them away and the heroes usually need as much rescuing as their chosen lady. In the pages of TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE, this couldn’t hold any truer than it does in Meredith and Rhys’ story.

I would need a thesaurus to come up with enough adjectives meaning “wonderful” to do it justice.

Rhys is haunted by a painful past that is tied up in twisted knots with Meredith and the struggling village he left behind fourteen years earlier. Now he’s determined to right the great wrong he believes he is responsible for by marrying the head strong lady innkeeper and rebuilding the estate his family abandoned along with the village—they, on the other hand, just want him gone.

Meredith has been in love with Rhys since she was a young girl and when he returns all she can think about is sharing one night in his bed before the inevitable happens—he leaves. When he declares that fate has brought him home and he plans on staying she has to try and balance the yearnings of her heart with what she thinks is best for the people of the village she has worked so hard and sacrificed much, to support.

Reading their story and traveling along the same path, they walk on the journey to finding love, forgiveness and happiness through each other was incredibly touching in so many ways that I couldn’t possibly explain them all. It’s something you will have to experience yourself to know exactly what I mean.

The third and final book of the Stud Club trilogy, THREE NIGHTS WITH A SCOUNDREL will be arriving at a book store near you on July 27th, 2010.
