WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S HOLD by Lisa A. Olech with giveaway

Lisa A. Olech

Happy Thanksgiving! Such an exciting holiday for me this year. Not only is it my favorite time to visit with family and friends, but this year is extra special because of my new book release! Today the debut of my pirate Captain’s of the Scarlet Night Series entitled, WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S HOLD sets sail!

Now I know, the tradition—at least in my family—is to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade before stuffing ourselves with as much turkey as we can hold, and then hitting the den for hours of football interrupted by the occasional piece of pumpkin pie. In honor of my new novel, however, what if we trade football for some classic pirate movies? There are so many to choose from. Black and white classics. Newer releases. Fun for all ages! Come on, what’s better than an Errol Flynn swashbuckler? We can still have pie!

Here’s a list of my top ten favorites (In no particular order):

The Crimson Pirate (1952) with Burt Lancaster and Nick Cravat. This is half parody and half tribute to all swashbuckling epics. Burt did all his own stunts.

Captain Blood (1935) Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland. Flynn uses a dagger to slide down the mainsail. Classic!

The Pirate (1948) Gene Kelly plays Mack the Black opposite Judy Garland. Who can resist a musical about pirates?

Pirates of the Caribbean (2003, 2006, 2007, and 2011) Two words….Johnny Depp! I know this is technically four movies, but I’m counting them as one. It’s my release day. I can do what I want!

Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951) Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo. I love Gregory Peck, too. (Sorry Johnny!)

Hook (1991) with Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams playing Peter Pan all grown up. I loved Julia Roberts as Tinkerbelle.

The Princess Bride (1987) Cary Elwes plays Dreaded Pirate Roberts alongside Robin Wright’s Princess Buttercup, and an amazing cast.

Against All Flags (1952) This was Errol Flynn’s last pirate film, and one of the few pirate movies to feature a woman pirate, Spitfire Stevens, played by Maureen O’Hara.

Frenchman’s Creek (1946) starring Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. This was the only time Basil and Nigel acted together and were not Sherlock and Dr. Watson.

Muppet Treasure Island (1996) Kermit the Frog plays Captain Abraham Smollett opposite live-action actor, Tim Curry. Don’t Muppets beat football?

I understand pirates and turkey are an odd combination, but why not mix things up this year. Skip the football! Embrace pirates! I wonder if I could substitute that pumpkin pie for rum cake?

Captain Jaxon Steele is a tall, sun-bronzed, fierce-fighting Pirate King. He and the notorious crew of the Scarlet Night are both feared and respected for their ruthless reputation. The Captain’s only love is the open sea and the ship he calls home. When it comes to women, he has three rules: never sleep with another’s wife, don’t take virgins into bed, and most importantly, never bring a woman aboard—that brings the worst luck of all.

Annalise Gatherone has to leave London—tonight! Usually her only concern is the color of her latest gown, but now she’s choosing between life and death. Desperate to escape the clutches of an evil Duke, she stows away aboard the Scarlet Night, hoping she’s bound for Port St. Maria. Winning Captain Jaxon’s affections, she just might sneak by unharmed. But when her plans are altered in ways she never imagined, she must batten down the hatches for a journey into unknown waters…
